OUR STORY

Oakwood Community Church was established in October of 1954 by founding pastor Roger Ketterman.  After a number of years of instability, the church hired Pastor Bob Service in the spring of 1966.  There were 12 people in attendance on his first Sunday preaching.  For many years Oakwood met and worshiped in a converted little white school house on Baldwin Road, just around the corner from our current location on Oakwood Road.  Under Pastor Bob's faithful and loving care, the church steadily grew over the years until they needed two worship services to accommodate everyone in 1991.

As the church continued to grow over the next few years, it became clear that expansion of the existing church facility was not possible.  In 1999, God opened a door for the church to purchase 14 acres on Oakwood Road.  Construction began in 2001, but we soon faced difficult circumstances that threatened to bring everything to a halt.  The church came together in prayer and persevered through this trying time to complete the project.  The new facility was completed, dedicated and opened for worship services in the Spring of 2002.  Pastor Bob continued to serve at Oakwood until his retirement in 2009.  He continues to be actively involved in the church and his legacy of love and care will always live on in the Oakwood family.

God continues

God continues to bless, provide for and grow Oakwood Community Church.  Pastor Don Holliday served at Oakwood from 2004-2013, strengthening the church with biblical teaching and establishing our small group ministry.  Pastor Shane Stec joined our staff in January of 2011 as Associate Pastor, working to strengthen Oakwood's leadership and ministries.  Throughout 2014 and into early 2015, Jeff Totten served as Oakwood's interim pastor and kept Oakwood working together as we searched for our next lead pastor.  In April of 2015 we entered the current chapter of Oakwood's story when God brought Pastor Don Jackson, (a.k.a., PD) to serve as our Lead Pastor.  PD is a dynamic, passionate leader and communicator who God is using to help carry on the legacy of Oakwood while working with the Elders of the church to move us forward to accomplish our mission of growing a great family... grounded in faith, guided by grace, and going in love!

what to expect on Sunday mornings

Oakwood Community Church is a nondenominational, Bible-centered church where you can experience God, connect with real, caring people, and grow in your faith. We offer two identical worship services at 9:00am and 11:00am on Sunday mornings.  Here are some things you can expect to experience on Sundays at Oakwood:

  • A Relaxed Atmosphere - Dress casual or dress up; either way you'll feel right at home at Oakwood. We care about connecting with you and helping you worship God and grow in your faith.
  • Friendly, Genuine People - Those who are new to Oakwood routinely tell us that the warmth and friendliness of our people is one of their favorite things. We know sometimes you need time and space to explore and get comfortable in a new place. At Oakwood you'll find people who care about you and want to connect with you when you are ready.
  • Relevant, Biblical Messages - Each week you can expect to hear a message that connects truths from Scripture with issues we face in everyday life. You will be both encouraged and challenged to grow in your faith and relationships with others as a follower of Jesus.
  • Contemporary Worship - Our worship band leads us in praise and worship each week with skill and passion. We regularly sing some of today's top contemporary Christian worship songs, occasionally mixing in classic hymns.
  • Dynamic Children's Ministry - We have a dedicated team of volunteers that love God and love kids. Each week they serve to connect with your children and help them grow in their faith through creative, age-appropriate Bible teaching. On Sunday mornings our ChildCare Ministry cares for our youngest children (infants through preschool) at both our 9am and 11am worship services.  Our SONshine Park children's ministry serves kids in grades K-4 at both the 9am and 11am services.  SONshine Park also has a separate ministry for students in 5th-6th grade, which is available only during the 11am service.

our mission & values

At Oakwood We are Growing a Great Family...

Grounded in Faith, Guided by Grace, and Going in Love

OUR MISSION is to multiply Christ-like DISCIPLES who are:

  • PASSIONATE about their God
  • OBEDIENT to God's Word
  • DEPENDENT on God through prayer
  • CONNECTED to one another
  • AUTHENTIC and RELEVANT in their witness

OUR MAIN VALUES

  1. Gospel Centered - We find our identity as children of God in the Gospel, the good news of Jesus Christ and His redeeming work on the cross and resurrection from the dead.  Therefore, we want the Gospel to be central to who we are and what we do.
  2. Biblical Transformation - The Bible is the inspired, inerrant, living Word of God, and leads to life change.  As we seek to master God's Word, it will master us and changes us from the inside out.
  3. Prayerful Dependence - Talking to God should be a normal, everyday practice for those following after God.  Asking God for greater faith, power, wisdom, and discernment will mark our conversations with Christ.
  4. Authentic Community - Encouragement, support, and a spirit of unity will define us.  As we do life together, we will speak the truth in love while pursuing deep relationship with Christ and one another.
  5. Extending Grace - We believe in a gracious God who forgives all who humbly call on Him.  Our relationship with Him is based in love, mercy and forgiveness, not works.  Therefore, we strive to practice love and forgiveness and always look for the best in others.
  6. Exceptional Generosity - We believe that those who follow Jesus should give beyond the minimum, moving beyond what's expected.  We will give extravagantly of our time, talent, treasure and testimony.
  7. Ministry Excellence - God has given us the high calling of reaching multiple generations for Christ.  We will give of our very best as we seek to reach our full kingdom potential for His glory and honor.
  8. Missional Multiplication - We are serious about expanding the kingdom of God and are strategic in our efforts to reach, teach, train and release movements of Christ-followers committed to doing the same.

what we believe

The Bible is the foundation of everything we believe and value at Oakwood because it is God's word to man. It guides us spiritually, instructs us intellectually, and it is alive and relevant for life today.  The following is a summary of our basic beliefs.

  1. We believe that there is but one true and living God. The Godhead consists of three persons: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
  2. We believe the Old and New Testaments, as originally written, to be inspired of God and are completely true and without error.
  3. We believe that salvation is a gift of God's grace and is extended to those who place their faith in Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord.
  4. We believe in the virgin birth of Jesus Christ, His death on the cross for our sins, His bodily resurrection from the dead, and the imminent return of our Lord Jesus Christ.
  5. We believe the true Church is composed of believers in Christ. No color, creed, denomination or congregation has any preference in the sight of God. Christ is the Head and we, the Church, are members of His Body. The local church is a group of believers in Christ, upholding the Word of Christ in a world for whom He died.

common questions

Is Oakwood Community Church connected to a denomination?

Oakwood is a nondenominational, Bible-centered church. While we are not affiliated with any particular denomination, the people at Oakwood come from a variety of backgrounds and we have a heart to partner with other churches and organizations to serve our community and reach people for Christ.

What is the leadership structure at Oakwood Community Church?

Oakwood is led by a team of Elders who guard the church’s beliefs, mission and values, as well as provide oversight, accountability and wisdom for the ministries of the church.  Our pastors and staff are responsible for day-to-day operations and lead some of our ministry teams. We also have a team of Deacons that oversee and serve in a number of ministry areas, such as facilities, security, care, and benevolence.  Click here to meet our staff and leaders.

What is Oakwood’s teaching and practice regarding baptism?

We practice believer’s baptism by immersion at Oakwood. The New Testament clearly teaches that baptism is to take place after a person accepts Jesus Christ as Savior. We baptize by immersion because it was the New Testament practice and best symbolizes what has already taken place… the forgiveness of sins and being given new life in Christ (see Romans 6). Baptism is an important step in the life of a believer and is one of the requirements for membership at Oakwood. Those who have been baptized by immersion as a believer at another church do not have to be baptized again at Oakwood.

How can I be sure my kids or teens are safe at Oakwood?

We care about your family and the safety of kids and teens that are involved at Oakwood. We have taken a number of steps to create fun, friendly and secure ministry environments. We use a secure check-in/check-out process on Sunday mornings to protect children while they are entrusted to our care. A background check is performed on all staff members and volunteers before they can serve with children or teens. Also, parents are welcome to stay with their children and observe the ministries at any time to become more informed and comfortable with our ministries and people.
